RABBIT URINE MAKING HUGE PROFITS FOR AN AGRIPRENEUR

Believe it or not, farmers using rabbit urine in production of their food are now saving on pesticide and fertilizer costs as the liquid offer major nutrients required by crops. It is a secret that you should know.
Rabbit farming is catching on across Africa for several reasons. Unlike other livestock, rabbits are not resource intensive animals and their meat is considered lean (low fat) and very healthy.

Carolyne Chebet is a Kenyan entrepreneur who farms rabbits not just for their meat, but for their urine which is a rich raw material for liquid organic fertilizer used on vegetable farms.
Urine has high levels of nitrogen. Nitrogen is a key element in healthy leaf formation. This makes it an appropriate folia boosting fertilizer. Because of the concentration of the compounds in the urine, the liquid also kills crop pests like aphids.

Aphids, mites, leaf miners and other pests drain crop sap in search of nutrients. On heavy infestation, the crops suffer from malnutrition as they discolourise. The leaves also shrink, effectively reducing the much needed surface area for food generation or photosynthesis.
The rabbit urine is collected and mixed with compost and allowed to ferment for 20 days in order to convert it into liquid fertilizer.

Each rabbit produces about 300 millilitres of urine everyday. For Carolyne’s farm which houses about 120 rabbits, this translates to nearly 36 litres of rabbit urine every day. She sells off the urine to a local organic fertilizer company that processes the urine before selling it off to end users.
